(1896).Born in Ireland in 1831, Patrick Cudmore emigrated to the United States in 1846, eventually settling in Minnesota a decade later. He farmed, practiced law, ran unsuccessfully for public office and served in the Civil War, 1862-1865. He was self-taught and "had high aspirations" for "honor and fame," which he aimed to achieve by writing books. He became a prolific author of tomes on history and government as well as poetry and political tracts. In 1896, he wrote his "Autobiography," which covered his youth, experiences in the Civil War and writings. He subsequently added a profile from a collection of biographies published in 1898, and details of his genealogical searches in the early 1900s. He died in February 1916, at age eighty-four. |
