The federal Town Site Act of May 23, 1844, is posted here followed by the Minnesota Town Site Act, first enacted in 1855 and amended twice, in 1857 and 1858.
The federal Town Site Act authorized settlers in an unincorporated community or town on public land to receive title to the lots they occupied. It left to the "legislative authority" of each state or territory the obligation to prescribe "rules and regulations" for the sale of the lots, conveyance of titles and other matters.
