Donahue practiced law in Minneapolis from 1902, when he was admitted to the bar, until death in 1950 at age seventy-two. But the military, not the law, was his dominant interest in life. He was on active duty in the Minnesota National Guard at various times from 1896 to the mid-1920s. During the First World War he was the second in command of the 151st Field Artillery, a regiment in the famous Rainbow Division, in France. Because of acts of heroism on March 5, 1918, he was awarded one of the nation's highest military honors, the Distinguished Service Cross.
