Viewing Martin M. Monaghan (1876-1950).Martin M. Monaghan (1876-1950).Martin Michael Monaghan, a graduate of Georgetown Law School, practiced law in Minneapolis from 1902 to death at age seventy-four in 1950. He was a respected trial lawyer who was unafraid to take on "borderline" cases--that is, on the frontier, where there was little precedent to guide counsel and the courts. He was particularly interested in cases raising constitutional law questions. Known for his eloquence, he was also respected as a brief writer. In a memorial for the Hennepin County Bar Association, Walter J. Welch recalled that Monaghan's "briefs often sparkled with witticisms and, at times, with sarcasm. He used his well-rounded education to sprinkle throughout his briefs apt passages and quotations from Scripture and history, and references to current events." |
