Cary (1875-1936).A graduate of the St Paul College of Law, Ernest Stevenson Cary was recommended by St. Paul Mayor Robert Smith to defend Minneapolis Mayor Doc Ames who was facing trial on charges of bribery. He was a member of the defense team in Ames's three trials. Thereafter he specialized in criminal law. He built a reputation as a superb criminal defense lawyer. After his death on December 13, 1936, at age 61, a colleague who knew him well, recalled him in a bar memorial session:
