When Senator George H. Sullivan died on February 15, 1935, members of the Washington County bar and the Minnesota Senate were shocked and felt an immediate loss. He was not only a leading lawyer in Stillwater but also an influential state senator, who was serving his fifth term.
In memorial proceedings by the county bar association in District Court on March 11, 1935, he was recalled:
"As a lawyer Senator Sullivan was stood at the head of the profession in the state. A hard worker, a fearless fighter, with resourcefulness possessed by few man, he was recognized throughout the Northwest is one of the ablest lawyers of this generation. Lawyers and courts respected his opinion, juries were swayed by his eloquence, and the general public, because of that honesty and integrity, had absolute confidence in him. He was a lawyer of the old school, his word was always good, and he neither asked nor gave quarter. He was always faithful to his client's cause. The profession has lost one of its outstanding leaders by reason of his untimely death."
Three days later memorial services for him were held in the Minnesota Senate and recorded in its Journal. The transcript of those proceedings and the results of the elections of Senator Sullivan are posted in the Appendix.
