James Bronson Bancroft, the clerk of court of Washington County District Court, died on March 22, 1970, at age 47. Several days later the judges of the Tenth Judicial District paid a tribute to him at a Special Term of the court:
"For the past five years he has served this court efficiently and in a businesslike manner. He was at all times courteous and pleasant, both with the public and with his associates. He must share in the credit of disposing of the large backlog of cases pending a few years ago in this court and in bringing the trial calendar of this court to its present current status. He will be missed by all of us."
