This article describes James Manahan's wife Minnie, daughter Kathryn, graduation from law school, admission to the bar and first six years of practice in St. Paul.

He took a written bar examination in St. Paul on March 2, 1889, and passed. He was admitted to the bar on March 7th. A copy of this examination is posted in the Appendix, as is a description of an oral bar examination given in Hennepin County that March. Many readers will find the two bar examinations the most interesting part of this article.
