Army during the Boxer Rebellion in China in the mid-1890s, as captain during World War I, later in the National Guard. He practiced law in Minneapolis from 1908 to retirement in 1946, specializing in mechanics lien law. He had interests outside the profession, as was noted in memorial services for the Hennepin County Bar Association after his death on April 13, 1949, at age seventy-four:
