He lost money, made bad investments and was saved by marriage. In 1853 he became deputy court judge in Bristol; in 1861 he became judge of the county court in Birmingham; and the next year he was appointed registrar of the bankruptcy court in Manchester. He retired in 1868 and died in 1890.
